Ferguson has never gone further than the second round in the League Cup
Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson is aiming for a run in the Carling Cup after early exits in previous seasons.
Posh travel to League One new-boys Wycombe on Tuesday night.
Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I will be playing my strongest possible team and I won't be making many changes.
"We want a bit of consistency in terms of team selection and we want a positive result."
Posh reached the second round in 2007 before going out to West Brom, but were knocked out in a first round defeat at Bristol City last season.
Ferguson says he cannot afford to experiment with his team selection despite Saturday's important Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday.
"We aren't good enough to be tinkering or rotating. We know it will be a difficult game," he said.
"It's one of the hardest draws we could have got. They have just won promotion so they will have momentum."
Posh last played Wycombe two seasons ago in a 2-2 draw at Adams Park with goals from George Boyd and Liam Hatch.
Wycombe centre-back Chris Westwood only left London Road over the summer, whilst Posh defender Russell Martin will hope to make an appearance against his former club.
But after being a virtual ever present last season, Martin was left out of the side against Derby on Saturday.
"Russell has been fine with it and has trained as normal," Ferguson said.
"I felt Charlie Lee [who came into the side] did fine on Saturday.
"These aren't easy decisions to make, but I've got to make them."
Defender Craig Morgan, who is away on international duty with Wales, will miss out for Posh possibly leaving Krystian Pearce to make his competitive debut.
Paul Coutts is struggling with a knock he picked up on Saturday and will be rested, but Craig Mackail-Smith is fit to start despite his lack of pre-season football.
