Ferguson has made three signings so far this summer
Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson says the club have made a second bid for Stockport youngster Josh Thompson.
With Stockport in administration, Posh are hopeful of making the 17-year-old central defender their fourth signing of the summer.
Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We've put another bid in and hopefully it's good enough.
"West Brom and Manchester United are reportedly in for him, but we're trying our best to complete a deal."
Thompson made just six appearances for the Hatters in League One last season, but has spent time on trial with both Manchester United and West Brom.
"He comes from a good background, wants to improve as a player, and we've had some good reports about him," Ferguson said.
"He's one of the best young centre-backs around and he's got good height, which we'll need next season [in the Championship]."
Posh have agreed a season-long loan deal for a Premier League defender, but Ferguson says that deal will not go ahead should they succeed in signing Thompson.
"There is a centre-half we can get on loan, but I'd rather do a permanent deal, so it's on hold until we know more with Josh Thompson."
Meanwhile, Ferguson says adding to his strike-force remains a priority with bids for Livingston's Leigh Griffiths and Stockport's Oli Johnson having been rejected.
"It's not easy. There aren't many strikers out there, but we'll carry on looking," he said.
Posh return for pre-season on Wednesday before flying out to Marbella for a week of warm-weather training on Monday.
