Posh target Premier League loans

Posh boss Darren Ferguson has transfer listed 12 players

Manager Darren Ferguson has said Peterborough United are hoping to sign Premier League players on loan.

Posh made Stockport winger Tommy Rowe their first summer capture on Tuesday.

Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We need a lot more strength in depth, Tommy is the start of it and we've identified three of four other players.

"We're working at a couple of Premier League loans and a couple of permanent signings, if we can get these in then it'll stand us in good stead."

It had been reported that Manchester United defender James Chester - who spent time on loan at London Road last season -was a target, but this has been denied by the club.

Over the past two seasons, Posh have mainly signed players in their early 20s and despite promotion to the Championship, Ferguson said the policy is set to continue.

"We're looking at the younger ones, it's worked well for us over the past couple of years and we'll need that in the Championship as well," he said.

"People will question the experience levels but the youthfulness should give us the energies we need."

Earlier this week, Ferguson placed 12 players on the transfer list including Sergio Torres, Chris Westwood and Shane Blackett.

He said the club needed to free up space in their squad for new arrivals.

"We're a different level now and I've got to make my mind up as a manager as to who I feel can step up to the Championship," he added.

Torres is the most unexpected name on the list having only joined Posh last summer.

Ferguson believes the 25-year-old needs a fresh start after failing to make an impact at London Road.

"It just hasn't worked for Sergio, sometimes for whatever reason it just doesn't work out when players move clubs.

"We spent a bit of money on him but he hasn't played enough football with missing pre-season and then getting injured again."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has confirmed that a move for Tranmere skipper Anthony Kay has collapsed due to the player's wage demands.
