Give Lewis more time, says Steele

Former Peterborough United goalkeeper Eric Steele has called on fans to have patience with number one Joe Lewis.

Lewis, a club record transfer when he arrived from Norwich in January 2008, has made costly errors in recent weeks.

Steele told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "He's a young goalkeeper - he's still learning, still maturing and he's need some time and some patience."

"All I'm asking is for fans to show a little patience with a good young keeper who'll have a very good career."

Steele enjoyed a four-year spell with Posh in the mid-1970s and is currently a goalkeeping coach at Manchester United.

Before the start of the season he was working with Manchester City, where he spent time training Lewis.

"Joe worked two days a week with me at City when he was on loan at Morecambe," Steele said.

"I saw a young, very raw keeper, but what he's done in the past 13 months has been incredible."

Lewis has become a regular with the England under-21s and went to Trinidad and Tobago with the full England squad last summer.

Despite recent errors, he bounced back with a solid 90 minutes at Tranmere on Tuesday.

Boss Darren Ferguson has vowed to stand by the 21-year-old and will pick him again at Hereford on Saturday.
