Ferguson widens striker search

Ferguson has generally preferred to sign young, up-and-coming players

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson says he may look to add a more experienced striker to his squad during the January transfer window.

First-choice forwards Aaron Mclean and Craig Mackail-Smith are respectively aged 25 and 24.

Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I know a lot of people will think we need a bit more experience and I can see the argument.

"We're on the look out for all sorts of players, young and old."

Peterborough have hardly struggled for goals so far this season, but Ferguson believes he may need further cover should fringe players be allowed to leave come January.

"It's an area I may have to look at with Scott Rendell, Rene Howe and Liam Hatch each with a possibility of leaving permanently," he said.

"But I've got a lot of belief in Craig and Aaron... they score goals and that's something that is difficult to replace."

Ferguson has hinted that the new man will need to offer something different from his regular front two and he seems likely to be looking for a striker in the target-man mould.
