Lewis hopeful of short spell out

Lewis was making his third England Under-21 appearance

Peterborough United goalkeeper Joe Lewis believes he should be fit enough to start the game against Colchester United on Saturday.

Lewis was stretchered off with an ankle injury during Tuesday's England Under-21 win over the Czech Republic.

The 21-year-old told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It was a bit over the top with the stretcher, it was just as a precaution really.

"I'm hopeful I'll be back for Saturday, at the moment it's looking alright."

Lewis was making his third appearance for Stuart Pearce's Under-21 side.

Manchester City's Joe Hart has been first choice between the sticks in recent months, but has become increasingly involved with the full England squad.

Lewis expects to get more of a chance for the Under-21s in the next few matches.

"It gives me the opportunity to start, Hart being with the full side and hopefully I can take full advantage of that.

"Hopefully I'll stay injury free, get a few more caps under my belt and prove what I can do."
