Deering targets Oxford first team

Oxford winger Sam Deering says he is eager to put his injury problems behind him and force his way into the plans of manager Chris Wilder.

Deering, 18, was United's star player in the first half of last season before a broken leg in Wilder's first game.

But, after making his comeback on Saturday, Deering told BBC Oxford: "I want to get back into the team.

"I've just got to try and get back into this team now, try and prove myself as much as I can when I get any chance."

The teenager, who had a loan spell at Newport recently, admits the task of earning a start at the Kassam Stadium is harder now after Wilder strengthened his squad in the summer.

"Obviously a lot of players have gone and a lot of players have come in, maybe better players. I just have to prove what I can do," he said.
