Oxford United chairman Kelvin Thomas has denied he has gone for the cheap option with the appointment of Chris Wilder as the club's new manager.
Thomas told BBC Oxford: "We were very impressed with him during the interview process.
"He knew a lot about the club, the players and the history, and he passionately wants to be its manager.
"I understand why people might think it's the cheap option, but that isn't the case."
He added: "There were more expensive options, but there were two credible people who were prepared to work for free.
"He is on a good package at our level. He won't be under the constraints that he has worked under before (at Halifax).
"Here he can work on a level playing field with the advantages of good support staff," Thomas added.
Jim Smith will step down as caretaker manager, but will remain involved at the club. The rest of the coaching staff will remain unchanged.
