Oxford United defender Matt Day's loan move to Blue Square South side Bognor Regis Town has hit a snag.
The 21-year-old scored for the England C team this week but has been put on the transfer list after issues over form and fitness.
U's boss Darren Patterson told BBC Oxford: "He's not done well enough with the opportunities he's been given."
But it is thought United do not want the player cup-tied and Day himself is stalling over the move.
Day reported back to pre-season training overweight and Patterson insists every effort has been made to improve his conditioning since then.
"When you are doing the things nutritionally that we are doing and he has struggled to get back into shape, it's down to one person only.
"He's a fantastic lad, but it's time for him and I to go our separate ways.
"Hopefully this will focus the lad and give him the best opportunity to play regular football."
