Royle was in charge at Boundary Park between 1982-94
Joe Royle has said Oldham need better players both in attack and defence to improve their results next season.
Latics have not won in six attempts since the former Manchester City and Everton boss returned to Boundary Park for the remainder of the season.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "We are deficient in both boxes. No matter if I'm here or not, I will give my ideas of what the team needs."
"But there's a good base here, a good base of young players."
Royle added: "They have a good passing ethic, they want to pass the ball and pass very well at times. But I have told them I question one or two of them in their personal fitness.
"You can't get fitness into players at this stage of the season because there's nothing left for the match days - they should be fit now.
"That's not a manager having a snipe at any previous management or anything like that, far from it - I think Shezza (John Sheridan) did great here."
