Former Norwich, Manchester City, Leeds and Coventry striker Darren Huckerby has completed a move to Major League side San Jose Earthquakes.
Toronto FC had first option to sign the 32-year-old but his concerns over their plastic pitch meant his rights were sold to the Californian club.
Huckerby was released by the Canaries in May with his contract set to expire.
The former Newcastle man scored 34 goals in 162 games in five seasons with the Canaries.
His agent Phil Smith said: "He knew a lot of people at Toronto. Carl Robinson used to be at Norwich and John Carver is also out there as coach. And the facilities were unbelievable.
"But he liked the idea of California. It is a new experience with a bunch of people he does not know. It is the right sort of challenge at this moment in his career."
San Jose, without a win in their last five matches, are at the foot of the Western standings.
