Crosby had a spell as caretaker boss at Sunderland

Northampton Town assistant manager Malcolm Crosby has agreed a new three-year contract at the club.

Crosby, whose previous clubs include Sunderland and Middlesbrough, joined Northampton in September last year.

"I've enjoyed my time at the club so far. I think we have made big progress in the last six months," Crosby said.

"We were disappointed to miss out on the play-offs, and when you think where we were before Christmas, that is a sign of how far we have come."

He added: "We want to continue that progress."

Crosby was reserve team boss at Middlesbrough under Steve McLaren and assistant manager to Gareth Southgate.

He joined the Cobblers when they were 17th in League Two.

They finished the season in 11th place, having challenged for the play-offs until the last game of the season.

Chairman David Cardoza said: "We have secured the services of a very experienced and talented coach who the players respect enormously.

"Malcolm and Ian Sampson make a very good team and they work well together. This gives us stability and allows Ian and Malcolm the opportunity to plan for next season and beyond."
