Crosby coached Sampson at Sunderland from 1991 to 1993
Northampton Town caretaker manager Ian Sampson has added Malcolm Crosby to the coaching staff at the club.
Crosby led Sunderland to the FA Cup final as caretaker manager in 1992 when Sampson was at the club as a player.
Sampson told the Cobblers official website: "Malcolm was a big influence on my playing career [at Sunderland].
"He is vastly experienced and he is coming in to help us out. He has worked at all levels of the game and I know he can benefit us."
Crosby has also managed at Oxford United, and held assistant posts as West Brom and Derby County.
In July 2004, Steve McClaren appointed Crosby as reserve team manager at Middlesbrough. In the summer of 2006, Gareth Southgate appointed him as assistant manager.
He was released by Middlesbrough in June, following their relegation to the Championship.
