Persistent rain prevented any play on day one of Essex's County Championship game with Division Two promotion rivals Northants at Chelmsford. It left third-placed Essex the more frustrated of the two sides. The hosts have a 12-point gap to make up on Northants if they are to join Kent in gaining promotion to Division One next season. The weather had already forced an early lunch but attempts to get going ceased just before the scheduled tea interval.
