Thornton was making his fifth appearance for the Cobblers
Northampton Town winger Kevin Thornton will escape a fine for his sending-off in Friday's 3-0 defeat by Aldershot.
The Irishman, who only joined the Cobblers last month, was sent off after just 12 minutes for a reckless stamp on Barbados international Anthony Straker.
Boss Ian Sampson told BBC Northampton: "I'm not into fining players; if it had been foul and abusive language or a head-butt it might be different.
"I think he probably meant to stand on the ball and missed it."
The manager added: "We've had a good chat; he's very apologetic but there's been many a player sent off for a bad tackle so we get on with it.
"We've put it into his head that it won't happen again and we move on."
