Northampton Town's new defender Dean Beckwith believes he has nothing to prove to his former club Hereford.

The 25-year-old was not offered a new deal at the end of last season after the Bulls were relegated to League Two.

Beckwith told BBC Radio Northampton: "I had three very good years at Hereford, but last season didn't go too well for anyone involved at the club.

"I want to have a better season than I did last year, but I don't think I've got anything to prove to Hereford."

Beckwith experienced promotion from League Two with Hereford in 2007-08.

He added: "It's very difficult and every game is a battle. But I think our squad's good and there's definitely enough quality to get out of this league.

"I'm confident that I can perform at this level and in League One.

"Nobody wants to play in League Two. You want to play at your highest level, so obviously I want to try to get Northampton back into League One.

"I feel it's a good move for me. I'm going to be happy playing football, so hopefully I can produce my best football this year."

Beckwith joins former Bulls striker Steve Guinan at Sixfields. The Cobblers have made one other pre-season signing; former Bristol Rovers defender Craig Hinton.
