Hughes targets new Cobblers deal

Hughes has made the most appearances for Town this season

Northampton Town defender Mark Hughes has set his sights on a new contract as he prepares to take the captain's armband against Tranmere on Saturday.

The 22-year-old from Merseyside, who has been linked to Tranmere, fills in for regular skipper Chris Doig who misses the game through suspension.

"It's the first I've heard of [the link] - you get these rumours all the time," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

"I'm in the last months of my deal and I'm working hard to earn another one."

"I know people are watching so I'll just be keeping my head down and doing what I'm hopefully good at, which is defending and giving 100%," he added.

Doig should have been available to face Tranmere but his one-match ban was carried forward when Tuesday night's game against MK Dons was abandoned at half-time.
