Smith vows to fight for Shearer

Newcastle striker Alan Smith believes interim boss Alan Shearer has given him the boost to join the fight for Premier League survival this season.

Smith, 28, made his bow under Shearer in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Tottenham after eight months out injured.

"I spoke to the manager when he came in and he said he wanted me to be a big part of his squad but I'd only played two games all season," Smith said.

"I've played a few more reserve games since then and I feel good."

Having experienced the devastation of relegation before, the current situation is all too familiar for Smith.

At Leeds United, he and his team-mates battled the drop for two campaigns, with the second season of struggle culminating in a drop into the Championship for the first time in 14 years.

"It's a bit different on a personal note because I've only been involved in a few games this season. It's more frustrating this time watching the lads and not being able to help them," added Smith.

"Hopefully we can all get our heads down and build on the second-half against Chelsea.

"Everyone in Newcastle understands, we'll have 52,000 people behind us, roaring us on.

"I hope the manager decides to stay, because we've got a squad that are determined. Survival is key."
