Morecambe's new stadium put back

Christie Park, Morcambe
Christie Park will see two more seasons of football

Morecambe have revealed that they are to put back their multi-million pound stadium move by 12 months.

The Shrimps were expected to play one more season at Christie Park before moving to the Westgate area of the town.

Chairman Peter McGuigan told BBC Radio Lancashire: "The process that we are going through has taken longer than we anticipated."

"I think we've made fantastic progress but were a little bit overambitious."

We are not in League Two just to stay in it. We've got higher ambitions than that

It had been anticipated that all planning, legal and sales agreements would be completed by next month but now they are not expected to be finalised until September.

Work on the new 6,800-seater stadium is now expected to begin in May 2009 and be ready for the start of 2010/11 season.

"On the positive side, it just gives us a bit longer now to plan for the new development and make sure we have a proper pre-season in the new stadium which we wouldn't have had if we were opening it next year," McGuigan said.

"The ambition is now greater than it's ever been. We are not in League Two just to stay in it. We've got higher ambitions than that and the new stadium is just a part of it."
