Lancashire batsmen take control

County Championship D1, Old Trafford (day one, stumps): Lancashire 261-5 v Hampshire

Paul Horton, Stuart Law and Lou Vincent all hit half-centuries as Lancashire put themselves in a good position on day one of their game with Hampshire.

Horton and Vincent shared a three-figure opening stand of over 100 as the hosts got off to a flier.

Pakistani Imran Tahir hit back on his maiden first-class Hampshire start as he removed the top three and bowled Steven Croft to finish with 4-80.

But Francois Du Plessis finished up unbeaten on 37 for Lancashire.

Captain Law won the toss and decided to bat - and Horton and Vincent soon began to fill their boots as they put on 110, Lancashire's best for the first wicket all season.

New Zealander Vincent hammered 58 off 69 balls including two sixes before he swept Tahir to Michael Lumb at short fine leg.

Horton was caught at short leg by Michael Brown soon after lunch for 66 before Iain Sutcliffe was taken at slip by Sean Ervine off the leg spinner following a rain delay.

Law brought up his own fifty from 104 balls with five fours but he was out the very next ball, caught at mid-wicket by Brown off the bowling of David Balcombe.

Tahir then bowled Croft with the final ball of the day to neatly finish off his 31 overs.
