Former Notts County midfielder Neil Mackenzie has returned to Mansfield on non-contract terms.
The 32-year-old, who started his career at Stoke, made more than 80 appearances for the Stags from 2002 to 2004.
Stags manager David Holdsworth told the club's official website: "Neil will bring a lot of experience.
"He is a very talented footballer in the midfield department and his stay with us may be made more permanent over the next few days."
Mackenzie's contract with the Magpies was cancelled by mutual agreement last week.
He has also had spells at Blackpool, Macclesfield and Scunthorpe.
