York City's Alex Lawless makes Luton Town switch

York City midfielder Alex Lawless has joined Luton Town on loan, with the switch becoming permanent in January.

The deal, which involves an undisclosed fee, sees the 27-year-old sign a contract keeping him at Kenilworth Road until the end of next season.

"I am very disappointed to see a player of Alex's calibre leave," Minstermen boss Gary Mills told the club website.

"However, we need players who want to play for York City, are focused on their jobs and happy at the club."

He added: "If this is not the case then they will only become restless and in turn this will affect their performance.

"On the positive side I have several players in mind that I would like to sign for the club and the fee received for Alex will give us the funds to attract the right players to the club.

"Also, Chris Carruthers and Levi Mackin are now close to match fitness which will bolster our midfield options."

Lawless, who joined York on a free transfer from Forest Green in June last year, featured 58 times during his time at Bootham Crescent.

The Welshman had made 107 appearances during a three-year spell at Forest Green, after spending one season with Torquay in 2005, where he played 16 times.

The former Cardiff City youngster can operate in defence but helped York to last year's Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final operating in a central midfield role.
