Kevin Twaddle rejected Livi's offer

The Argentine is available on a free transfer having reached the end of his contract with Barcelona de Guayaquil, who presently lead the championship in Ecuador.

Leishman told his club's website: "Sergio was very impressed with the club in general and with West Lothian in particular.

"We arranged a short tour of West Lothian for the lad this morning: he has a young family and he has to be confident that they will settle, but I know both he and his wife were very impressed with the locale.

"We are hopeful of a confirmation over the next week or so."

Berti had joined Barcelona from Argentine side Huracan following stints with Mexican side America and Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

But he made his name during three spells with Argentine giants River Plate, interspersed with transfers to Italian side Parma and Spaniards Real Zaragoza.

Berti is probably best known in Britain for scoring one of the penalties that knocked England out of the 1998 World Cup finals in France.

His experience could be invaluable as Livingston head into the Uefa Cup for the first time next season.

David Bingham had another offer

The man nicknamed "La Bruja" (the witch) scored 44 goals during 184 appearances in the Argentine league.

Meanwhile, Leishman disclosed that Livi had dropped their interest in former Motherwell winger Kevin Twaddle.

Bingham believed he was being allowed to leave the club, but the two sides resolved any differences over a new contract.

He said: "I've never hidden the fact that I've always enjoyed my time at Livingston, the supporters here have been fantastic and I'm delighted at the prospect of continuing my Lions career with a trip to Europe next term.

"I've had a few enquiries from other clubs, including a confirmed offer, but I'm delighted to continue here at Livingston."
