Butcher played more than 100 league games in two previous spells at Lincoln
Lincoln City manager Peter Jackson has said the signing of former Notts County midfielder Richard Butcher highlights the Imps' intentions for next season.
Butcher, 28, put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Sincil Bank on Thursday.
Jackson told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "Your first signing of the summer is key, it shows your intentions.
"Richard's a really good player who can score goals from midfield, he's reached double figures in the last two seasons and that's what we need."
Butcher is returning for a third spell at Sincil Bank, but Jackson denied that the signing was purely to please the Imps' supporters.
"He's popular with the fans but that's not why I signed him, I signed him because he's a quality player with a good reputation here," added Jackson.
"Richard's level-headed and he knows all about the club but he set such high standards when he was here before that there'll probably be more pressure on him to perform than on any other signing that comes in."
