Smith warns Ferdinand
Ferdinand celebrates with former Leeds team-mates Smith and Bowyer
Alan Smith has told Rio Ferdinand he will be "hammered" by Leeds United fans when he returns to Elland Road with Manchester United next Saturday.

Ferdinand will be the centre of attention following his controversial 29.1m move to Old Trafford after England's World Cup campaign.

And Smith - who starred for England alongside his former Leeds team-mate in the 1-1 draw against Portugal - warned Ferdinand he will receive a red-hot reception.

He said: "He'll probably get hammered knowing the Leeds fans. But he did everything he could for our club and it's out of our hands.

"The only reason he'll get stick is because we are so disappointed to lose him - that's first and foremost."

Smith added: "I hope he gets hammered. It might put him off - I'm only joking because he's a good lad and a world-class player.

"It will be strange playing against him, but I'm looking forward to it."

And Ferdinand returned the compliment as he said: "Alan Smith is a great player and that has never been in doubt for a lot of player who have worked alongside him. Hopefully he will continue his progression."
