Sven-Goran Eriksson's England selection policy has been labelled a farce in some quarters after he used seven substitutes in the friendly against Portugal.

So who were the winners and losers in Sven's big lottery?

DAVID JAMES
Goalkeeper James needed a faultless, and nerveless, display to make Sven-Goran Eriksson banish David Seaman from his mind.

He may have started the move that ended in England's goal, but looked uncertain throughout - a factor which may have contributed to fatal uncertainty at set-pieces.
Verdict: Loser

LEE BOWYER
Bowyer looked like a man making up for lost time when he finally made his England debut after an international exile.

Busy, aggressive, creative. Made his mark with the cross for Alan Smith's goal and staked a serious claim for a place on the left flank in Slovakia.
Verdict: Winner

STEVEN GERRARD
Eriksson will have been delighted to have him back after missing the World Cup through injury.

Not spectacular, but neat and tidy. He has a self-confidence about his play that acts as a galvanising effect on England.
Verdict: Winner

NICKY BUTT
Butt was a major World Cup success, and with competition set to increase with the return of Gerrard, needed to continue the good work.

He did that and more besides, confirming Eriksson can rely on him on any occasion.
Verdict: Winner

EMILE HESKEY
Heskey was once again sacrificed from his regular striker's role to play on the left. And while he battled gamely, he is not the answer to the problem.

And to make matters worse for Heskey, Alan Smith came in and looked every inch an England strike partner for Michael Owen - not a great day for Emile.
Verdict: Loser

ALAN SMITH
The biggest winner of the day. Brilliant performance. Brilliant goal.

Smith was a man with a mission, and it was a delight to see this gifted youngster make headlines for his great ability as opposed to the darker side of his character.
Verdict: Winner

OWEN HARGREAVES
Pitched into the unfamiliar right-back role - and demonstrated why he should only operate in midfield in the future.

Hargreaves found his positional sense exposed and should have stopped Portugal's equaliser when he was stationed on a post at a corner.
Verdict: Loser

JONATHON WOODGATE
Generally sound second-half performance. A couple of good blocks early on, but took a bang on his knee.

Didn't show anything we didn't already know. Quality defender who is an excellent back-up to Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand.
Verdict: Draw

DAVID DUNN
Dunn played 45 minutes on his England debut at the start of what many believe will be a lengthy international career.

He showed some neat touches, but other than that cruised through what was a quiet introduction to the big stage.
Verdict: Draw

PAUL ROBINSON
Surely in among all Eriksson's substitutes, Robinson had a case as strong as any other to be used to give the talented youngster vital international experience?

Robinson may be the answer to England's current goalkeeping problems and should have played at least 45 minutes.
Verdict: Loser

SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON
Eriksson won with his selection of Smith and Bowyer, who are now strong contenders to play in Slovakia in the European Championship opener.

But he had a troubled week after being humiliated by Sir Alex Ferguson, and must still be worried about the goalkeeping position after his mysterious failure to give Paul Robinson his debut.
