Kettering Town defender John Dempster is targeting a play-off place this season, as his side begin their season away to Gateshead on Saturday.
The Poppies missed out on a place in the end of season play-offs last season finishing in sixth place.
Dempster told BBC Radio Northampton: "I think it would be a magnificent season if we could get in the play-offs.
"We have got to be looking at trying to push on in that direction and maybe better what we did last season."
Dempster added: "There's loads of strong competition this year and quite a lot of money has been spent.
"I think Luton are going to be strong again - they finished really well last season.
"I think a couple or teams might surprise a few like Fleetwood and Rushden.
"We'll be concentrating on our own job and hopefully we can surprise a few."
