Poppies boss Lee Harper has candidates for captaincy

Kettering Town boss Lee Harper says he is yet to make a decision on who will captain the team this season.

Defender Ian Roper had the armband last term, but faces competition from fellow defenders John Dempster and new signing Ashley Westwood.

Harper told BBC Radio Northampton: "They are all candidates. Ashley has natural leadership qualities and he was Wrexham's club captain.

"But John and Ian have done nothing wrong, so it's a difficult decision."

Five of the summer arrivals at Rockingham Road are former Kettering Town players, while Westwood spent three years at nearby Northampton Town.

"Last season, we had two players from Manchester and that didn't bode well," said Harper.

We're nearly there but we're possibly looking to add another striker and another midfield player to the squad

"Now we've got local lads who can do a job for us and have an affection for the football club.

"I believe that they will give their all. Honesty, passion and desire is what we want from them and the rest will take care of itself."

One player unlikely to be making a move back to Rockingham Road is striker Kwesi Appiah.

The 19-year-old was on loan at the Blue Square Bet Premier club last season, and was released by Peterborough United in July.

"We're looking to compliment what we've got already," added Harper.

"It might be that we're looking for a bigger, taller striker to add to our options, so Kwesi might not fall into that bracket.

"We're nearly there but we're possibly looking to add another striker and another midfield player to the squad."
