Ipswich miss out on double swoop

Keane has already signed Troy Brown, Damien Delaney and Lee Martin

Ipswich Town are set to miss out on the signing of two players whom manager Roy Keane agreed a fee for last week.

The duo, widely reported as Sunderland players Dean Whitehead and Daryl Murphy, are believed to have rejected personal terms at Portman Road.

Keane told the club's website: "We had two players in mind and were hopeful something could be sorted out last week but that has not come to fruition.

"We will now look elsewhere and have identified other targets."

The squad will return from a training camp in Portugal on Tuesday.

After a pre-season game at Brentford on Wednesday, the team will then set off for a two-match pre-season tour in the Republic of Ireland with Waterford United and Cork City providing the opposition.

Town lost a friendly 2-1 to Finn Harps last week, causing Keane to say: "I learned a lot about one or two of my players.

"I'm taking stock very quickly of what we have and what we don't have."
