Histon eye Peterborough United academy players

Histon manager John Beck says he has held talks with Peterborough United about the possibility of borrowing some of their youngsters for next season.

Beck worked with Posh manager Gary Johnson at Cambridge and is on the look-out for young talent.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've spoken to Gary and he's mentioned a couple of lads so I'll be going down there in pre-season.

"It's the sort of relationship we need with our local League sides."

Histon have hugely reduced their budget over the past six months with most of their first-team squad leaving.

Beck said he is going to be relying on youngsters to do the business for him on the pitch.

"We're going to be on the smallest budget in the league and it will probably be half of the lowest budget elsewhere in the league," he said.

"We'll be working under terrific constraints and it's a massive task ahead of us.

"Any academy boys who are pushing for a pro-contract are just the sort of players we are looking for as it's the only way we can exist."

Goalkeeper Joe Welch is the first player to sign a new deal at the Glass World, while the likes of Adam Bygrave, Lee Smith and Gareth Gwillim remain under contract.

Beck has said they are talking with a number of their out-of-contract players about new deals, but has admitted they may not have the money to attract them back.

"We would love the likes of Adam Tann and Matt Langston to return, but it may well be the case that we cannot afford them now," he said.

Histon's crowds slumped towards the end of last season with fans becoming disillusioned by the club's off-field problems.

"Everyone needs to be part of 'Team Histon' and we need an image change as there was a lot of negativity last season," he said.

"We want home games to have a carnival atmosphere, we want children to get in for free, we want bouncy castles, we want the Histon Hound."
