Simon Davey won over by Hereford United ambition

Davey aims to take Hereford back into League One

Hereford United manager Simon Davey says it was the new board's drive and enthusiasm that persuaded him to take the job at Edgar Street.

The 39-year-old former Darlington boss says he is confident the club can compete at the top of League Two.

"It is a club that looks to me as though it is moving in the right direction," he said.

"In my conversations with the board they matched my ambition as I want to get into League One and further."

Davey resigned from Darlington earlier this month and since then had been closely linked with a move to Edgar Street.

But the United chairman David Keyte told BBC Hereford & Worcester rumours that Davey had been lined up as Graham Turner's replacement for some time were wide of the mark.

"The first time we sat down to talk was on Monday of this week," he said.

"But equally I have to accept that the speculation has possibly got us to where we have ended up," he admitted.

Davey is well aware of the conspiracy theories doing the rounds in the North East but says he resigned from Darlington after being offered a job in the United States.

He says it was only when he returned to England that United made contact with him.

"I got off the flight and had a telephone call that led to me sitting down with the new ownership here at Hereford," he said.

"They offered me the chance to manage a club of this stature with these ambitions and that outweighed the prospect of my going to America," he added.

Davey has brought in Andy Fensome as his assistant manager and the pair hopes to be able to announce at least two signings early next week.

The new Bulls boss has also confirmed he has already spoken to Richard Rose about his future. The defender is the only one of last season's squad who was offered a deal who is yet to confirm his intentions.

"I am due to speak to him again on Monday but he has an offer from another club and that club is in a higher division," he said.

"So it would be understandable if he did decide to move on.

"But we have to make sure we are in the ball park with him to see if he can stay at the football club."
