Turner expects clubs to take time

Graham Turner feels players will have to be realistic this summer

Hereford United chairman Graham Turner says clubs are likely to play the waiting game when it comes to their their squad rebuilding this summer.

Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester some of their targets have admitted they have not had too many calls.

"Some players have already knocked us on the head because they have had bigger offers from League One clubs.

"But there is quite a number who have said they have had no enquiries as yet," he added.

While he stepped down as manager at the end of last season, Graham Turner remains as director of football at Edgar Street and remains actively involved alongside successor John Trewick.

They have got to be realistic, and I get the impression that they know that

He feels that players and agents are resigned to the fact that they will need to be realistic in their demands this summer.

"John and me have worked together over a list of players and we have asked some of them if anything is happening yet and it has been a case of, 'no, I haven't had a single phone call yet'," he said.

"Maybe that is an indication that clubs are now delaying things while they see what is on the market.

"There is a massive list of players coming in as it was forecast that from Football League clubs alone there would be over 800 players out of contract this season," he added.

The Bulls' chairman believes that after a period when the players and agents have held sway the balance of power is swinging back in favour of the clubs.

Graham Turner says clubs of United's size are never going to successfully sign all of their top targets, but he feels there will be no shortage of quality players keen to secure their Football League futures.

"There is no doubt that [in the past] we have lost players because we couldn't match what they were looking for and we wouldn't pay agents' fees," he said.

"But I think there will be a change in the climate now when you talk to agents and players.

"They have got to be realistic and I get the impression that they know that.

"Obviously the good players will still be in demand and will still command good contracts, but there are an awful lot that could do a good job for us who will come down to our wage levels."
