Trewick becomes Hereford manager

Trewick takes charge for the final two matches of the season

Hereford United coach John Trewick has accepted the offer to step up to the manager's job at Edgar Street.

Chairman Graham Turner, the ex-manager, told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "It's a good time for John to take over, there is a number of players out of contract.

"He's been keen to get into management and we have been talking about that for some time and the opportunity has now arisen for him."

Turner resigned after 14 years in charge following their relegation.

The 61-year-old admits it was a very difficult decision but feels the time is right for him to focus fully on the off-the-field aspects of running the club.

John will have total charge of team selection, the players that we bring into the club, the tactics and anything of that nature

He freely admits the club has underachieved this season and so feels his decision to step down was the right one.

"Over a career you set standards for yourself and I've got to say that we have fallen below those standards this year," he said.

"Our league position is an embarrassment to me.

"After all the experience I have had in the league we should have done better," he added.

Turner is well aware that cynics will see his decision to retain the director of football title as an indication that he will remain the power behind the throne.

He is also aware that his statement that he hopes United does not prove to be his last management job has also fuelled speculation that he could be about to leave Edgar Street.

But the chairman has moved quickly to alleviate concerns on both of these issues.

"To alleviate any conjecture about the roles, John will have total charge of team selection - the players that we bring into the club, the tactics and anything of that nature," he said.

"Right at this moment, despite conjecture about that, I have not spoken to any other club, nor do I have any intention of doing so."
