Players answered my call - Turner

Chris Turner
Turner says he was delighted with his side's response

Hartlepool United manager Chris Turner has praised his players for their performance in Tuesday's 1-0 win at Swindon Town in League One.

Turner was angry after Saturday's home defeat by Leyton Orient and the former Sheffield Wednesday boss felt his players answered in a perfect manner.

He told BBC Tees: "We played well and showed a lot of character in bouncing back from Saturday's disappointment.

"They showed a lot of desire to get something from the game tonight."

The win was Pools' first away from Victoria Park since the end of October 2008, when Carlisle United were beaten 1-0 at Brunton Park.

And Turner admitted he sensed the relief that this victory had brought to his squad, both in breaking that run and easing relegation fears.

"We've gone home that many times empty handed, it becomes really frustrating," he said.

"Tonight we were strong, we were solid and we worked hard.

"It takes the pressure off Saturday [at Colchester] in that if we had been beaten again tonight the pressure would have come on and Swindon would have been ahead of us on goal difference."

Pools are 15th in League One with 39 points from 33 games.
