Grimsby Town defender Steven Watt closes in on return

Steven Watt
Watt made just one Premier League appearance for Chelsea

Grimsby Town are hoping centre-half Steven Watt will return from a knee injury during the busy Christmas and New Year programme.

Watt, 25, suffered medial knee ligament damage in the Blue Square Bet Premier defeat at Kidderminster.

A setback in training has kept him out longer than originally expected.

"He will obviously need games before he he is considered for the first-team level," Grimsby boss Neil Woods told BBC Radio Humberside.

The 6ft 3ins Scot began his career under former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in 2004, where he made two appearances before spending an injury-hit two-and-a-half years at Swansea City.

Watt then had a loan spell at Inverness Caledonian Thistle before moving to Scottish First Division side Ross County, where he spent two seasons.
