Royce dismisses retirement talk

Simon Royce
Royce had considered retiring this summer before signing a new deal

Gillingham goalkeeper Simon Royce says he wants to play on until at least his 40th birthday in two years' time.

Royce, 38, has recently regained a spot in the first team, starting the last six games ahead of Alan Julian.

He told BBC Radio Kent: "I'd love to play until I'm 40. I don't really see why not as long as I can still do it.

"I do think I can still play. As long as somebody offers me a new deal I will keep playing. Another two years and then we will see."

Royce joined the Gills initially on loan in April 2007 before making his deal permanent.

He signed a one-year deal in the summer and would be very keen to sign a new contract at the end of the season.

"I am still playing and as long as I think I can do it, I will keep doing it," he added.

"I want to stay in the game and will do my coaching badges. I think I would have a lot to offer as a goalkeeping coach but that is in the future."

Royce has also played for Southend, Charlton, Leicester, Brighton, QPR and Luton in a career spanning 19 seasons.
