Gowling made only six appearances in his spell with Carlisle
Gillingham have signed defender Josh Gowling from Carlisle United on a two-year deal.
Gowling, 24, joined the Gills on a month's loan in July and has played every game this season.
The defender, who began his career with West Brom, made six appearances for Carlisle and went on loan to Hereford.
Gills manager Mark Stimson praised his performance in Tuesday night's Carling Cup defeat to Blackburn despite playing him out of position.
"You bring players to the club to play to their strengths and play in their positions but sometimes, like Josh, they have to move across and do the best they can," he said.
"That's happened to Josh but he has come in and done his best in that role and it's hard to criticise him."
Gowling moved from West Brom to Danish Premier Division side Herfolge.
Carlisle signed him on a free transfer last summer after three years with Bournemouth.
