Pulis holds fond Gills memories

Pulis is still in contact with many people from his four years at Priestfield

Former Gillingham manager Tony Pulis still has fond memories of his time in Kent, despite his controversial exit.

Pulis, now a Premier League boss at Stoke City, took the Gills to the verge of promotion to Division One in 1999.

But after their play-off defeat to Manchester City, Pulis was sacked for gross misconduct and took the club to court for wrongful dismissal.

He told BBC Radio Kent: "I had a great four years at Priestfield and still speak to lots of people down there."

He added: "I've got very good friends there and good memories of Gillingham both on and off the pitch."

Fate wasn't with us that day, it was with Man City

Gillingham were 2-0 up with less than two minutes left, only to see Manchester City score twice with the equaliser coming in injury time.

City went on to win the penalty shoot-out 3-1.

And Pulis said: "I can remember the dressing room to this day. I can remember Adie Pennock broken-hearted and crying because we had completely controlled the game and deserved to win.

"But fate wasn't with us that day. It was with Man City.

"I was so pleased to see them get promoted the following year because the majority of players were the players I'd brought in and worked with.

"I still talk to most of them now and that team was a very good team."
