Stimson's side were relegated to League Two in his first season
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson says the club is still paying the price for having players who were not willing to play for him.
Stimson, who has been in charge at Priestfield for nearly a year, told BBC Radio Kent it has been tough and frustrating first 12 months.
"When we had bad results the guys not in the team would walk about with a smile on their face," Stimson said.
"I had more rows then than I've ever had in my life."
The Gills boss claims a number of players, particularly senior figures, refused to take his ideas on board.
We're paying the consequences because the budget's had to be cut
Mark Stimson
"Certain players didn't want to entertain the hard work and I had to shift a lot of them.
"I found myself rowing with players over nonsense really - just over me wanting them to work and them not wanting to work.
"Then you've got into the financial side of things and it was absolutely crazy what we had to pay players to leave this football club.
"In the end we had to do it but now we're paying the consequences because obviously the budget had to be cut and we can only attract a certain sort of player now."
Gillingham were relegated to League Two at the end of last season.
