Gateshead signing Parkinson made 75 league appearances for Grimsby

Gateshead boss Ian Bogie has praised the debut of midfielder Andy Parkinson who made his debut for the side in their 2-1 defeat of Barrow on Tuesday.

Parkinson, 30, created the opening goal for the Tynesiders and Bogie revealed his pleasure at his successful start in Gateshead colours.

"Andy came on the pitch and showed his quality," Bogie told BBC Newcastle.

"He's a quality player, played at the highest level and he'll be a great acquisition for us."

Parkinson was snapped up by Gateshead after the forward had been released by former club Cambridge United at the beginning of the month.

The former Grimsby, Sheffield United and Notts County player has enjoyed a long career in the Football League, and made over 100 appearances for Tranmere Rovers, with whom he reached the League Cup final in 2000.

The deal to sign the winger was tied up in the hours before Tuesday's game, with the signing made following the release of former Sunderland midfielder Darren Williams.

Meanwhile Bogie was full of praise for Barrow following his side's victory, which came with both sides engaged at the wrong end of the Blue Square Premier table.

"It was like a cup tie to be fair, two teams going hammer and tongs and trying to win the game which was refreshing to see," Bogie said.

"I've seen two sides tonight that I'm quite adamant won't be relegated.

"We had chances, they had chances. It was a nightmare for a manager, it was a heart in the mouth time."
