Falkirk reject Hibs' Arfield bid

Falkirk have rejected £300,000 from Hibernian for midfielder Scott Arfield, BBC Scotland has learned.

According to the club website, Hibs boss John Hughes made two bids for the 20-year-old that "fell considerably below" Falkirk's valuation.

Bairns manager Eddie May has already turned down bids from Hamilton and English Championship sides for Arfield.

But with the transfer window about to close, Falkirk fans will soon know if anyone comes in with an improved offer.

A statement on the club website states: "Falkirk Football Club fully expects Scott Arfield still to be a Falkirk player when the transfer window closes."

Hughes was responsible for bringing Arfield through the ranks at Falkirk and promoting him to the first team.

Earlier this month May said: "If somebody comes in with a good bid, you have to look at it like any other football club.

"We've had a number of enquiries for Scott from the Championship, but I don't think it's fair to put a figure on it."

Hamilton Academical tabled a £100,000 offer for the Scotland Under-21 star, who has four years on his contract to run.

May said he was disappointed that Hamilton had discussed the details of the offer in public.

"Hamilton were more than entitled to make a bid for Scott, but they should never have disclosed the figure," said May.

"It's private business between clubs, but they've all been told we would like to keep him.

"They'll be kept informed if somebody makes a higher bid than them, but we've already said no."

Arfield played in Falkirk's 2-1 defeat by Dundee United in Saturday's Scottish Premier.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old striker Carl Finnigan has extended his contract at Falkirk until the summer of 2011, having joined the club from Newcastle in January 2007.

Finnigan exercised an option on his current deal.

May said: "I have been pleased with Carl to date.

"He is looking sharp, scored a fine goal against Rangers, was unlucky not to score with the header against Hibernian and provided an assist for (Kjartan) Finnbogason's debut goal on Saturday.

"I am delighted he has taken up his option and I am sure that he will continue to score goals for this club."
