Dundee United hope Wilkie will be able to lead the side out at Hampden
Dundee United manager Peter Houston plans to step aside and let former captain Lee Wilkie lead the team out for Saturday's Scottish Cup final.
The defender was forced to retire at the age of 29 earlier this season after being plagued by knee problems.
"I can't thank the gaffer enough," said Wilkie, who moved to Tannadice from city rivals Dundee in 2006.
"To give up the chance to lead the team out so that I can be part of the day is an incredible gesture."
The Scottish Football Association are yet to grant permission for the break with protocol but United do not foresee any problems.
Houston approached Wilkie with the idea a few days after United set up their meeting with Ross County with a semi-final win over Raith Rovers last month.
"I'm honoured to be manager of Dundee United going into a Scottish Cup final and that's enough for me," said Houston.
