Knee injury forces Dundee United's Lee Wilkie to retire
Houston described Wilkie as one of the best centre halves in the SPL
Dundee United captain Lee Wilkie has been forced to retire because of a persistent knee injury.
The 29-year-old, who underwent a series of operations on a damaged cruciate ligament, has now been advised to end his playing career.
The Scottish Premier League club have agreed compensation with the player.
"This is a huge blow for the club and for Lee personally," said Dundee United manager Peter Houston. "Lee was one of the best centre halves in Scotland."
Wilkie joined United from city rivals Dundee in 2006 and became an important first-team regular at Tannadice under former manager Craig Levein.
In my opinion, during last season he was the best centre-half in Scottish football, bar none

"In my opinion, during last season he was the best centre-half in Scottish football, bar none," said Houston.
"He has fought back from injury with great courage in the past and it is equally courageous of him to finally accept the advice now given.
"The club has always been supportive of Lee and I'm pleased that matters have been agreed between him and the chairman.
"Lee will always be welcome at the club and we hope to see him and his family around Tannadice on a regular basis."
Wilkie's playing career also included loan spells at Plymouth, Notts County, Falkirk and Ross County.
