This is Clough's first pre-season in charge at Pride Park
Derby County manager Nigel Clough believes his side will learn some valuable lessons following their 2-1 friendly defeat at Chesterfield.
Paul Green gave Derby a first-half lead, but the home side hit back through Scott Bowden and Robert Page.
Clough told BBC Radio Derby: "It's not nice losing football matches, even a friendly in pre-season, and ideally we don't want to do that.
"If we can learn some lessons from them at least we take something from it."
The Rams were missing a number of keys players through injury, including winger Kris Commons and forward Rob Hulse.
They also lost the services of Paul Green just after he scored his goal.
"He just jarred his ankle as he landed after the goal he scored. We hope he is up and back on the pitch in the next week or so," Clough added.
"Looking at the first-half performance we're encouraged by it. We've got three weeks to work on things with plenty of games to work on match sharpness and to last a little bit longer in to the game.
"We saw 60/70 minutes which is the time players are up to at the moment, but in the last 20 minutes they're getting tired."
