Quakers want Franks and Waghorn

Martyn Waghorn
Waghorn had a spell on loan at Charlton last season.

Darlington manager Colin Todd wants Middlesbrough's Jonathan Franks and Martyn Waghorn of Sunderland on loan.

The Quakers boss is keen to add to his squad and told BBC Tees the 19-year-old strikers are among his top targets.

He said: "I would love to bring Waghorn in but Steve Bruce said one or two Championship clubs are making enquires.

"Franks is another one we are interested in, but Gareth Southgate said they can't do anything until they've done their pre-season."

Waghorn made his Sunderland debut against Manchester United in 2007 and spent part of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic.

While Boro youngster Franks made first-team bow at West Ham in May, and has impressed for Gareth Southgate's side in pre-season.

Todd also confirmed he wants to sign former Hartlepool United midfielder Darren Williams and former Bradford defender Mark Bower, both of whom played in Wednesday night's goalless draw at Hamilton.

However, trialists Craig James and Ben Starosta won't be staying at The Arena after failing to impress in pre-season.
