John joined Palace on a one-year deal after leaving Southampton

Crystal Palace striker Stern John has been ruled out for at least six weeks after it was confirmed he needs surgery on an injured elbow.

The 32-year-old picked up the injury in his first competitive match for Neil Warnock's side on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Eagles boss says he still wants to buy another striker.

The club is banned from signing new players because of a dispute over unpaid bonuses and signing-on fees from last season.

But Warnock has told BBC London 94.9: "The chairman is working his socks off to get the embargo lifted, to try and get me this other striker.

"I am sure he will come up trumps in the next few days or weeks."
