PRO40 DIVISION TWO, The Oval: Surrey 156-2 beat Glamorgan 189-5 by eight wickets (D/L) (Surrey 2pts)
Stewart Walters has now hit three one-day fifties this summer |
Surrey skipper Stewart Walters top scored with an unbeaten 67 as his side powered to an eight-wicket Pro40 victory against Glamorgan at The Oval. On a rainy night when Mark Ramprakash was the centre of attraction, Walters and Usman Afzaal (23no) home on 156-2. Earlier, Glamorgan keeper Mark Wallace (42no) had top scored as the visitors posted 189-5 from 37 overs. But, on a night when the weather was the main threat, Surrey piled on the runs to ensure a Duckworth/Lewis win. It was Surrey's first Pro40 Division Two win at their fourth attempt against a Glamorgan side who now also boast the same record of two points out of a possible eight. And, although Glamorgan's total was a reasonable one, the result was never in doubt from the moment Australia-born Walters got started on his second Pro40 fifty in three games. Either side of two short rain breaks, Walters and Michael Brown (35 in 26 balls) came out of the traps at almost 10 an over from the off to ensure they would always be ahead on the D/L formula. Brown was lbw to Robert Croft and, after a rapturous reception, Ashes candidate Ramprakash chipped in with a six and two fours in a run-a-ball 24. But it was left to Walters and Afzaal to finish the job in comfort.
