Crewe manager Dario Gradi says that the performance of defender Carl Martin was a positive to take from Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth.
The 23-year-old, who usually operates as a full-back, played much of the game in the centre of defence following an injury to Danny O'Donnell.
Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "He's very quick and he's a great leaper.
"He can be a bit rash, but he wasn't rash today. I thought he came on and looked every inch the part."
Martin was making only his second appearance in the Football League, having signed from non-league Wealdstone in October.
Along with O'Donnell [knee], midfielder Ashley Westwood [ankle] was also forced off in the first half at the Alexandra Stadium.
"Neither of them will be out for a long period of time, but I'm not expecting either of them to play against Torquay on Tuesday," added Gradi.
