Crewe manager Dario Gradi will assess his options before allowing Patrick Ada to leave the club on a temporary basis.
Gradi was prepared to let Cameroon-born 25-year-old go out on loan, but an injury to skipper Mat Mitchel-King has left him short of defensive cover.
"We've got Carl Martin and Harry Davis, but Patrick would be ahead of those two," Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke.
"We haven't got anybody that wants to take him at the moment, so I'll make that decision if I have to."
Harry Worley is the likely replacement for Mitchel-King in the starting line-up for Crewe's home game with Bournemouth on Saturday.
Ada was signed by former boss Gudjon Thordarson from Blue Square Premier side Histon in the summer, and has started 16 games in total for the Alex.
However, his last appearance for Crewe came in the FA Cup first round defeat against York on 7 November.
