Crewe Alexandra can find non league 'gems' - Neil Baker

Baker has returned to the Crewe coaching set up under Dario Gradi

Crewe Alexandra chief scout Neil Baker believes they can unearth more stars from outside the Football League.

Manager Dario Gradi has said that he cannot afford to strengthen in January.

But Baker told BBC Radio Stoke: "We've picked up players like Colin Little, Tom Pope and Luke Varney in the past, so they are out there.

"People will say they're not, but they are watching Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal. We're watching Hyde, Stalybridge and Woodley Sports."

When asked about signing new players during the transfer window, Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "If I told the board I'd found a real bargain, I'm sure they'd have a good go at scraping the money together."

Crewe signed defender Carl Martin from non-league Wealdstone in October, but he is yet to make a first-team appearance for the club.
